Concern over North Belfast apartments amid claims of drug abuse and anti-social behaviour

A concerned father has said he is "constantly living on edge" due to the drug abuse and anti-social behaviour at his North Belfast apartments.

The dad says that for the past few years he has witnessed people injecting drugs in the bin area of the Antrim Road apartment block while also finding used needles in the hallways.

He said there is a small number of residents who are making life hell for the others with a "constant stream of people" coming and going from the apartments. He has also raised concerns that he has seen people with knives in the hallways.

The dad says he has had the front door of his apartment kicked through on occasions "by mistake", with it taking months for his door to be fixed leaving him worried about the safety of his flat.

He said: "For years these flats have been a nightmare to live in. It was supposed to be somewhere nice to live and bring my children, but it is not safe for them to go outside of the front door.

"There are a few apartments that are causing all of the problems, bringing a constant stream of people in and partying. The drug abuse that goes on is disgusting and you regularly see people taking heroin where the bins are and I often find used needles lying around the hallway.

"There have been people in the hallways with knives and we even have to deal with the fire alarms being set off in the middle of the night.

"I have had my front door kicked through and found people in my flat, who said they got the wrong apartment when they saw me and ran off, but even then it took months for my door to be properly fixed and secure.

"There is police in and out of the place all the time and only a few weeks ago armed officers were raiding a flat in here. It has got to the point where people have stopped complaining because nothing is ever addressed and if the people causing the problems were dealt with then the rest of us could live in peace."

A spokesperson for Radius Housing said “At Radius we aim to ensure that all our tenants are safe and we are committed to tackling all forms of anti-social behaviour. Where anti-social incidents occur, we encourage tenants to contact the PSNI and Radius Housing, so the appropriate action can be taken in accordance with our policies and procedures. Our security contractor carries out visits to these properties, and we will monitor any reports relating to anti-social behaviour.

"Radius staff, who have been onsite this week, will continue to liaise with tenants, and a number of repairs are being scheduled."
