Concern for safety of children as road in Nottinghamshire turns into 'race track' at night

Neighbours who live on a new housing estate in the village of Linby say a road running through the development is being used as a 'race track' - and that it's a matter of time before there's a serious crash.

People living at the vast Sherwood Gate development warned that cars were speeding most nights along Askew Road, located off Papplewick Lane in the village.

And homeowners said they were concerned about the safety of children, and that the problems associated with the speeding, such as noise, seem to be getting worse.

HR worker Susan Burkett, 38, who lives in Askew Road, said: "It is a bit concerning, there is absolutely no need for it.

"A lot of people have children on the estate, safety for them is the main issue.

"It's unnecessary, the road is quite small and the path is narrow.

"The noise is bad also, when a car speeds up the road you can really hear it."

People on the estate said that a speed bump was previously added to the estate to tackle speeding in the area.

Customer service worker Dom Ainley, 38, said he hadn't seen the issues first hand - but that he wasn't surprised by the reports.

The Askew Road resident said: "It is 100 percent a nice area, it is always quiet, I feel safe here.

"It isn't an issue for me, I've heard one or two cars, but nothing too bad.

"It could happen for sure and might be more of an issue for other neighbours, but I haven't noticed it."

A resident of the road, who asked not to be named, said it was a matter of time before an accident occurs.

She said: "It's really loud and always happens in the dark at night.

"It's definitely got worse, people park on the road and it is quite narrow, something will happen soon.

"You hear them revving their engines, it is big throaty sounds.

"It's been happening for around a year, people have young children around here which is scary.

"It happens at least every week, you wouldn't expect it for this area, it's a race track."

Neighbourhood Inspector Chris Jury, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We know speeding and road safety remains a key area of concern for local people and, as our ongoing targeted enforcement operations have shown, including in rural villages, we will continue to listen to residents and take action to address their concerns.

“This work is also being bolstered by the deployment and increased visibility of safety camera vans across Gedling in support of our enforcement to tackle and reduce speeding in rural areas.

“As a force we see the devastating impact speeding can have after resulting in serious and fatal collisions. Speed limits are there for a reason and drivers exceeding them are not only breaking the law but are selfishly putting others at risk.

“Speeding also causes misery for our residents, affecting their quality of life, which is another reason we have been tackling the issue. We also continue to work closely with Gedling Borough Council as well other road safety partners to help keep our roads safe.

"We’re urging motorists to stick to the speed limit, pay attention and take care at all times. We will continue to stage speeding operations and take appropriate action against drivers found to be breaking the law.”

A spokesperson for Bellway Homes, the housing developer behind the new estate, said: "Bellway takes the safety of residents extremely seriously and we have installed speed bumps on the site to reduce the speed of drivers.

"We have not received any complaints directly relating to speeding but we have instructed our site team to look at the issue to see if there is anything we can do to help address the situation, although as speeding is a criminal offence, it would be a matter for the local Police and Local Authority to investigate the issue further."
