Concern for Nottinghamshire woods 'full of wildlife' which are blighted by litter and fly-tipping

Residents have raised concerns about litter and fly-tipping in woods in Clifton - and urged people to dispose of their rubbish correctly. Bottles, clothing, plastic bags and even sofas are just some of the items residents have come across recently in Glapton Woods, off Clifton Lane.

Now, members of the community have decided to use their own initiative and do something about the problem. Last week, an independent councillor for Clifton East shared a post on Facebook of himself and volunteers carrying out a "huge" clean-up at the location.

Hayley Chambers, 36, lives in Clifton. Hayley's dog enjoys wandering through the woods.

Speaking about the issue of litter and fly-tipping at Glapton Woods, she told Nottinghamshire Live: “Luckily, it isn’t a concern for children because I know no-one who takes their child for a walk in the woods. But a lot of people take their dogs and I’ve seen glass on the floor before.”

The property advisor added: “If glass hurts your dog's paws, it can be really serious. I’m glad that a councillor and volunteers were out to clean it up but people just shouldn’t do it full stop.”

Glapton Woods is behind Whitegate School. The woodland is also known to many as Whitegate Woods.

Kevin Sheldon is 62-years-old. Now retired, Kevin has lived in Clifton all his life.

He said: “I always pick up rubbish when I see it and even though I don’t want to, I give people two chances until I report it. The woodlands are full of wildlife with foxes and birds, it's enjoyable there.”

Darren Arwaithe, 34, lives in Clifton. The kitchen manager said: “I’ve seen rubbish on Glapton so many times. I found a scarf there once and have seen plastic carrier bags.

“I’ll pick the rubbish up when I see it and there are bins about so I don’t know what the answer is. It’s a wooded area so you’re mostly likely not to get caught when fly-tipping or littering.”

Kevin Clarke, an independent councillor for Clifton East, clears up litter in his ward regularly. He spoke about why it is so important for him to do this.

Councillor Clarke, leader of Nottingham Independents, said: “We spent several hours in the woods on Saturday and completely removed all the fly-tips, rubbish blankets and more. We as local councillors believe it is vital to show that we genuinely care about the ward we serve.

“We go out most days and weekends when we are not at work, clearing and cleaning the local parks and woods to mix with our residents and get them involved in helping keep their community clean. I’m a firm believer that this subject should be on the school curriculum and education should be taught with our youngsters at an early age. We will be out again this Saturday at the Waterdown Road Woods so if you wish to meet us, please do not hesitate to call me.”
