Concern and confusion from locals as murder probe continues into 'unexplained' death

Three men remain in custody arrested on suspicion of murder after an "unexplained" death at the landmark apartment block which looms above Salford Precinct.

At around 10.30pm last night (Friday June 17) emergency services descended upon Briar Hill Court, following concerning reports about a man who was unconscious. Despite being rushed to hospital, the man died a short time later. The man has yet to be identified and a post mortem is still to be carried out.

Three men were arrested on suspicion of murder, while Greater Manchester Police (GMP) stated that the death is "unexplained" and confirmed that investigations are underway to ascertain the full circumstances of what happened.

With huge red lettering on the side and an arrow pointing towards the shopping precinct below, the 1970, 25-storey building is an instantly recognisable part of Salford's skyline. The block was sold to a private company by Salford council in 1994.

This afternoon, dozens of people buzzed their way in and out but every person spoken to by the Manchester Evening News was at a loss to explain what had happened the night before. A man named Kev stood outside the entrance as several people asked him why police were parked by the bus stop across the road.

Kev shrugged his shoulders and shook his head whenever anyone came to him for information and seemed surprised and concerned when he found out the real reason that officers were there.

Just before 1pm, a plain-clothes detective made his way into the building, carrying evidence bags. Around half an hour later, a uniformed officer followed him.

Pendleton Newsagents and Convenience Store is next door to Briar Hill Court's entrance but the shopkeeper said that he had not heard any news. "We closed at half six last night, so I don't know anything," he commented.

Two ladies left the building to head to work at around 2.30pm but they also seemed perplexed. "It sounds like you know more than us," one told the M.E.N.

"I was working last night and I had wondered why they [the police] were here but they haven't told us anything. I just know it was difficult to get into the building and it took us a while to figure out how to actually get to our floor."

A GMP spokesman said: "Officers were called to Briar Hill Court, Salford, at about 10:25pm on 17 June 2022 to reports a man was unconscious. NWAS also attended and took the man to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead about an hour later.

"His death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody while the full circumstances are established."
