Benfica president Rui Costa has explained the club’s reasons for allowing Darwin Nunez to join Liverpool.
The Reds completed the signing of the striker earlier this summer, in a deal that could be worth up to £85.5million. The forward signed a six-year deal that keeps him at Anfield until 2028, with Liverpool agreeing an initial fee of £64.1million (€75m) with a possible £21.3m (€25m) in add-ons.
Since his move, Nunez has enjoyed an up and down start to life in a Liverpool shirt. He has two goals to his name, but did get shown a red card during his home debut against Crystal Palace last month.

Now, in a round-up explaining Benfica’s transfer business this summer, Costa has detailed the reasons why Nunez was allowed to sign for Liverpool.
“We are talking about one of the highest transfers of the market,” Costa told BTV.
“We are still coming out of a pandemic situation, which held back the football market. Making a sale of €75m+€25m is not open to discussion.
“The sale of Darwin is more than justified. There weren’t even conditions to keep him; it was completely impossible, for the values that came into the club and for what Darwin went on to earn.”
