The mayor of the Eurobodalla Shire Council says his community is reeling after a five-week-old baby tragically died in a suspected dog attack on the weekend.
Mia Jade Riley was rushed to Moruya Hospital late on Saturday night by her parents Lani and Tom Riley after they called NSW Ambulance but decided not to wait for paramedics.
The infant died from a head injury shortly after midnight.
NSW Police said an investigation was underway into Mia's death, and two Rottweiler dogs, believed to have been involved in the attack, had been seized by Eurobodalla Shire Council.
The fate of the dogs was yet to be determined and the council declined to comment further.
Calls for privacy
Members of the community have been posting tributes and messages of support for the family since news emerged of the tragedy.
Mayor Matthew Hatcher said the community was in shock but he could not comment on the fate of the animals due to the ongoing police investigation.
He reminded people to give the family privacy.
"The community is reeling, and my thoughts are with the family," Cr Hatcher said.
"When things like this happen, lots of people are affected.
"It's something you don't want to see any family go through."
It was believed the couple were visiting family in Moruya at the time of the incident.
