Community 'numb and in shock' after man's body found in Antrim

An Antrim community is "numb and in shock" after a man was murdered in the Craighill area of the town.

It is believed the man was murdered in the early hours of Wednesday, with local people saying the victim was aged in his late 40s or early 50s.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested by detectives investigating the fatal incident.

One woman said they had heard a commotion on the street and went to see what had happened.

She told Belfast Live that one man had gone into the house and had discovered the victim "face down in a pool of blood."

"It was this morning when the guy went into the house and he came out screaming 'oh my God, he's dead, he's dead!'," she said.

"There's shots being mentioned but we've no idea if that's true. It's a terrible shock, we would all have known him.

"He was a lovely fellow, he would have done anything for anyone, it's absolutely shocking."

Another local woman said the area had some problems with drugs "like most areas".

"You don't think it's going to happen down the street from you," she said.

"You hear or it up the road in Belfast, but not here. Someone you know too, it's awful."

Another neighbour said that "nobody deserves that" and that it had been horrible news to wake up to.

Local DUP councillor Paul Dunlop said his sympathies were with the victim's family and urged anyone with information to come forward.

"Ballycraigy has developed into a great community environment," he said.

"There's great community groups in the area and it's something I didn't think I'd ever see here. Unfortunately this community has been dragged into it.

"The community needs reassured that this is hopefully just an isolated incident.

"I know the police have told me they're going to keep a presence around the area for the next few days to reassure the community.

"But having spoke to ones today, people are in shock, they're numb, they don't know what's going on, but that will all come out over a period of time."

SDLP councillor Roisin Lynch said there is shock in the area after the man’s body was found.

“The discovery of a body in these circumstances in a residential area is very concerning,” she said.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased who have lost a loved one in such a sudden fashion.

“I would encourage anyone with any information about what took place to come forward to police as soon as possible and assist them with their investigation.”

Police have said their investigation into the murder is ongoing and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
