Community in mourning after 'sincere' and 'lovely' dad of two killed in tragic road roller incident

Tributes have poured in for a man who was tragically killed in a crash involving a road roller in Co Monaghan on Monday.

Dad of two, Peter Murphy, was remembered as a "lovely" and "sincere" man who "always made time to stop and chat".

The incident occurred at Shankill in Smithboro at around 9.45am.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene, but sadly Peter, the driver of the vehicle, was pronounced dead.

He will be reposing at his home from 2pm on Wednesday before removal on Thursday to St Michael's Church for funeral mass at 3pm. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

A funeral notice reads: "Predeceased by his parents Pat Peter and Phyllis.

"Sadly missed by his loving wife Deirdre, children Tadhg and Róisín, sisters Geraldine, Claire, Faye and Kathryn, mother in law Nora, father in law Jim Pat, brothers in law, sisters in law, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. R.I.P.

"Reposing at his residence from 2 p.m. on Wednesday (25/05/2022). (Please note time change)

"Removal on Thursday (26/05/2022) at 2.15 p.m., arriving at St. Michael's Church, Corcaghan for Funeral Mass at 3 p.m.

"Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery."

People have paid touching tributes to Peter online after his untimely death.

Offering their sympathies to the family, one person wrote: "Sincere sympathy to Deirdre Tadhg Roisin & extended Murphy family on the sudden & untimely passing of Peter.A great work colleague and a gentleman. May Peter's gentle soul rest in eternal peace".

A second said: "Shocked to learn of the death of Peter,a lovely man,sincere sympathy to all of his family and his wide circle of friends.May he rest in peace."

While a third wrote: "We are devastated to hear of the sudden passing of Peter.I have lost a good pal and work colleague.I will miss our fun conversation and banter together .My heart goes out to Deirdre Tadhg Roisin and the immediate family.God bless you Peter."

Recalling the impact Peter had on their life, another said: "Deeply saddened to hear this terrible news about Peter. He was a lovely lad and always made time to stop and chat. Sincere sympathy to Deirdre and his family during this very difficult time."
