A man who died in a horror smash in the early hours of Friday morning has been named as Daniel Dolphin.
The single vehicle crash - on the R293 between Ballaghadereen and Gorteen, at Edmonstown in Co Roscommon at 3.30am - also claimed the life of an Eastern European woman.
Daniel, in his 20s, is from a well-known family in Ballymote in Sligo while the woman, in her 30s, also lived in the town.
He was pronounced dead at the scene while she was rushed to Castlebar Hospital but lost her battle for life a short time later.
A third man, also in his 20s, was taken to the same hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Sligo Cllr Gerard Mullaney told the Irish Mirror on Friday: “I’d have to begin by offering my condolences to both families.
“The community in Ballymote this morning to the devastating news that two young people lost their lives in this crash.
“Everyone is shocked, saddened and numb. Our prayers and thoughts are with the families involved.”
Fr James McDonagh, Parish Priest in Ballymote, said people were unaware that the victims were from the town.
But later on in the day yesterday, the news began to emerge.
He added that there is “widespread grief” and passed his condolences onto the family.
It is expected that Daniel will be laid to rest early next week.
Post-mortem examinations were being carried out on the two victims’ remains yesterday.
The crash site remained closed for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators yesterday with local diversions in place.
A garda spokesman said: “Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R293 at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Castlerea Garda Station on 094-9621630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
