Community groups urged to roll out funding pitches for cycling and wheeled sports

COMMUNITY groups are being encouraged to submit proposals for funding that could transform participation in cycling, skateboarding and scootering.

With the deadline set for February 3, the new Wheels in Motion Fund offers awards ranging from £1000 to £10,000 to eligible non-profit organisations in Glasgow.

Glasgow City Council has allocated £150,000 to the fund, aiming to remove barriers to these activities whilst promoting health, wellbeing and sustainable travel.

Angus Millar, Glasgow City Council Convener for Climate and Transport, highlighted the initiative’s role in tackling health inequalities and supporting Glasgow’s green ambitions.

He said: “We want to create a vibrant city where cycling and wheeled urban sports are accessible, inclusive, safe, and attractive to everyone.

“By removing barriers to participation, we can encourage Glaswegians to travel by bike for leisure or everyday journeys and support more people to have a go at skateboarding or skating."

Administrated by Glasgow Life, the initiative is aimed at supporting the city’s Cycling and Urban Sports Strategy and builds on the success of past projects like the Go Cycle Glasgow Fund, which enabled more than 1450 residents to embrace cycling as part of their daily lives.

The fund specifically targets under-represented groups to create an inclusive, safe, and accessible environment for cycling and wheeled sports enthusiasts.

Bailie Annette Christie, chair of Glasgow Life, said: “Embracing cycling and wheeled urban sport is so much more than sporting achievements alone.

"Increased participation in these activities offers individual health and wellbeing benefits, as well as supporting more sustainable transport choices.”
