Concerns have been raised over work to create additional street parking spaces on a Wishaw street.
John Carr says he is “appalled” that North Lanarkshire Council is “wasting money” on an unnecessary project while making cuts elsewhere.
John, the chairman of Coltness community council, claims that new spaces on the street where he lives are not needed.
He insists this type of works would be more appropriate in other streets nearby which do have long-standing issues with parking.
Mr Carr asked: “Who actually sanctioned this and what is the thought process behind it?
“They’re not needed in Newark Drive; there’s tonnes of space.
“There’s already a large on-street parking bay. There are also driveways, passing points and another area with garages that has more space for parking, if need be.
“There are parking issues that do need addressed in other streets in Coltness such as North Dryburgh Road, Lauder Crescent and Buchan Street. There’s a grassed area in North Dryburgh Road that could be turned into additional parking bays, but instead there’s a total disregard for what the public need.
“There was a three-car crash in North Kilmeny Crescent recently where there are cars parked on both sides of the street. That’s another road where there are issues.
“There are pot holes needing repaired, the council is cutting back on road repairs, salt bins, and grass cutting to save money, so how can they justify this spending?
"How is this beneficial to the Coltness community?"
Despite making enquiries into who within the local authority sanctioned the work and why, John says he is getting nowhere.
“I have a gut feeling that something isn’t quite right here. These bays just seem to have appeared overnight and the council are blanking my enquiries.
“There were eight letters sent out to residents in the street which indicate that it is something to do with Shotts Housing Office,” said John. “But why would that be?
“I’ve called there as it has their email address on the letter but the woman whose name is on it was unable to tell me anything.”
North Lanarkshire Council has been approached for comment.
