Community 'completely' shaken after man killed by bus

Neighbours have said their community is "completely shaken" by the death of a man who was hit by a bus.

Norman Rigby was killed on Canal Street, near the Bridgewater Complex, in Bootle, Monday, November 7. The "freak accident" has left the small community behind Canal Street "completely shaken" and they have paid tribute to the 63-year-old who has been described as a "true gentleman".

Neighbours have said that at around 4pm there was a "huge commotion outside" the Lock and Quay on Irlam Road when an air ambulance landed on the community field behind the pub. Unsure of what was going on "everyone came out and started recording on their phones".

Mo who runs the Irlam News shop across from the Lock and Quay said: "There was a helicopter hovering and a huge commotion so everybody came outside and started recording on their phones.

"We assumed that it was a training exercise or there was a fatality. The little kids followed them to the scene and got there before the police I dread to think what they saw."

Mo said that after the EHCO's story on the incident yesterday he recognised a photograph of Norman as he had visited the shop "several times before". Emergency services, including police, ambulance crews, and fire service dealt with the incident but Norman was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.

He said: "He was a nice guy he would come in and buy the usual coffee and sugar so it was sad to realise it was one of my customers and when he came in here he was always a true gentleman. It is upsetting he used to come in here and to find out he had gone that way is very sad. I would just like to send my condolences to his family."

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson from our Matrix Roads Policing Unit said: "Our sincere condolences go out to the family and we will be supporting them in the coming days after this tragic incident. Enquiries continue and we would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or captured anything on dashcam or other devices.

"You can contact us in various ways but ensure you pass on any information as soon as you can, so we can establish the circumstances. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call our Matrix Roads Policing Unit on (0151) 777 5747, email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk, or DM @MerPolCC on Twitter quoting reference 22000818150."

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive confirmed they are investigating the incident alongside Merseyside Police.
