Australia have retained their place atop the Commonwealth Games pyramid despite England's best attempts to cut down their lead in Birmingham.
The visitors from Down Under added one gold medal on the final day of the Games in men's hockey, after collecting golds in netball, the T20 cricket final, women's road race, two in diving and a one-two finish in the javelin on the penultimate day. Their single victory on the last day of the event proved enough to see off hosts England and win a second-successive Commonwealth Games.
Despite being pipped, Team England made it a Commonwealth Games to remember by making it their most successful Games of all time after winning a team record 176 medals.
England's previous record was set at 174, the amount they amassed at the Glasgow games back in 2014. They headed into the final day on 166, and eventually passed their 174 mark thanks to a gold and a silver in the men's doubles squash final.
The host nation also secured one-two finish in Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Noah Williams and Lois Toulson and Kyle Kothari in the diving, with their final tally standing at 57 golds, 66 silvers and 53 bronze medals. Northern Ireland also broke their national record at the Games after adding no fewer than five boxing medals to their total on Sunday. They've impressively won seven gold medals (18 total), surpassing the previous best of five they earned in Victoria 1994.
There was also some success for Scotland, as they enjoyed their best Commonwealth Games outside Glasgow, after they won 51 medals (13 gold, 11 silver, 27 bronze), just two less than their medal count in 2014.
