Commonwealth Games: Matt Walls involved in major crash at track cycling

Adam Peaty ended a roller coaster past few days at the Commonwealth Games on a high note as he claimed gold in the men’s 50 metres breaststroke final. Peaty’s eight-year unbeaten run in the 100m distance ended on Sunday but he warned his rivals he was like a cornered lion ready to “bite” back and duly claimed the only major gold medal missing from his vast collection after touching the wall first in 26.76 seconds.

Earlier, Jake Jarman made it a fabulous four gold medals after a sensational display on the vault, while teammate Joe Fraser grabbed a third gold on the parallel bars as England continued to dominate the gymnastics. Alice Kinsella took gold in women’s floor with Ondine Achampong continuing her sensational Games with a silver medal.

One of the stars of England’s athletics team, Keely Hodgkinson, safely made it through in the 800m heats, as did Scotland’s Laura Muir, although there was pain for compatriot Jemma Reekie, who was clipped on the final bend of her heat to finish third and suffer an early exit. Meanwhile, England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson is on top with a slender lead following four events in the Commonwealth Games heptathlon.
