NEW DELHI: The action at the 22nd Commonwealth Games got underway on Friday in Birmingham. The Indian women table tennis team, led by Manika Batra, started its title defence in emphatic fashion, outclassing South Africa 3-0 in its opening Group 2 tie.
Ace Indian boxer Shiva Thapa also began his campaign on a rousing note, defeating Pakistan's Suleman Baloch in the first round of the 63.5kg category. The 28-year-old registered a comprehensive 5-0 win over Baloch to move to the pre-quarters of the light welterweight
In the lawn bowl events, Tania Choudhury lost 10-21 to Scotland's Dee Hoggan in women's singles while the men's Triples team suffered a 6-23 defeat against New Zealand.
