Common passport defects that could see you sent home from the airport amid Easter travel warning

The Easter holidays are approaching, and so, many people that are lucky enough to have time off may be heading abroad for some much-needed R&R.

Dublin Airport has been in the midst of chaos for weeks now with staff shortages resulting in queue times hitting three and four hours for security and check-in.

Passengers are currently being advised to arrive at least three and a half hours before departure to ensure they make their final boarding call.

Being organised has never been more important, as the daa estimates continued chaos over the coming weeks as schools and colleges let out for the Easter holidays.

Checking your passport is still valid is something you should do weeks in advance, but you should also check the condition of your official travel document before heading to the airport.

According to citizens’ information, if your passport is in any way damaged, you can be turned away at the airport - this includes water damage, severe scratching on the identity card page, faded pages, loose binding, tearing on the cover, and so on.

Anything that can hinder identifying the passport as legitimate and belonging to the holder is considered enough damage to be turned away by airport staff.

According to the Revenue: “If your passport has been damaged you will need to return the damaged passport when you are making an application for a replacement.

“If your passport is damaged do not travel on it.”

If you have damaged your Irish passport while you are abroad, you should notify your nearest Irish embassy or consulate.

They can give you one of the following to travel home:

• A replacement passport that will let you finish your trip
• An emergency travel document that will get you home
