Common car mistakes pushing up your fuel costs as prices continue to soar

As fuel prices continue to soar, many people will find themselves struggling to tighten their belts amid the cost of living crisis.

Food and energy prices have already rocketed to eye watering levels and petrol and diesel prices are not doing anything to ease further pain. It was reported on Thursday that fuel had hit another record high with the average family car costing around £100 to fill.

The 2p rise, to 180.73p per litre, was the biggest daily jump in 17 years as diesel, already at least £100 a tank, jumped by more than a penny. The RAC issued a stark warning that prices could continue to shoot in these "unprecedented times" as we are "still some way from the peak."

However, according to the Mirror, there is not much you can do in terms of rising fuel prices, but there are some steps you can take in order to make your fuel last that little bit longer. Here are some top tips.

A light car

Keeping your car light will use less fuel, and the easiest way to do so is to empty your boot of any unnecessary items and remove heavy roof racks.

Tyres

Tyre pressure is important for safety, but it can also improve fuel consumption. Underinflated tyres increase fuel consumption as will overinflated tyres.

Speeding

The faster you drive, the more fuel you will use, as will heavy acceleration. You should also try to drive in the highest possible gear to reduce engine speed.

Cruise control

Cruise control on a motorway will likely benefit your fuel consumption due to keeping a constant and steady speed, but using cruise control on a bumpy or bendy road could see you using more. This is also a safety concern.

Air conditioning

Using the air conditioning is useful on a hot summer day, but it uses more energy and therefore more fuel. However, if you are driving at a high speed, it is better to keep your windows up and use the AC because when driving at speed, lowered windows will cause "drag".

Fuel prices

The website, PetrolPrices.com, is a handy tool to check fuel prices in your local area. According to the date, the cheapest place for petrol in Liverpool is Costco Liverpool, for members only, priced at 165.9p and followed closely behind is Applegreen, Liverpool priced at 169.9p.

For diesel, again the cheapest place is Costco Liverpool (members only) priced at 175.9p followed by Asda Bootle Strand Road priced at 179.7p.
