Commanders vs. Dolphins: Behind Enemy Lines with Dolphins Wire

The Washington Commanders (4-8) host the Miami Dolphins (8-3) on Sunday with a chance to pick up their first home win since Week 1.

Washington’s struggles cost defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio his job last week, and head coach Ron Rivera is taking over some of Del Rio’s former responsibilities. Now, the Commanders get to face the NFL’s most explosive offense, led by MVP candidate Tyreek Hill.

We know the Dolphins can score and have talent everywhere on offense. But to learn more about Miami, we reached out to Mike Masala, managing editor of Dolphins Wire, who gave us the lowdown on the 2023 Dolphins.

When do you think the Dolphins have a new contract for Tua Tagovailoa?

Dolphins Wire: Miami’s quarterback is on a fifth-year option for the 2024 season and all signs seem to be pointing toward an extension coming soon. While they probably want to wait and see how the remainder of this year plays out, considering the Dolphins’ cap situation (-$23 million in space according to Over the Cap next year), a new contract, lowering Tagovailoa’s cap hit, should come early in the offseason.

Outside of Hill, Waddle, Tua and Mostert who is another player Washington fans should know about on offense?

Dolphins Wire: Rookie running back De’Von Achane is probably the guy to watch. While he’s been dealing with a knee injury, he’s set to return to action this weekend. Between Weeks 3-6, Achane rushed for 455 yards and five touchdowns on over 12 yards per attempt. On top of that, he was a weapon in the passing game as well, recording eight receptions for 63 yards and two more scores. If he’s good to go, Mike McDaniel will do everything he can to get him the ball.

How good is Miami’s offensive line?

Dolphins Wire: The Dolphins have dealt with a ton of injuries to the group this year, with 10 different guys and seven different combinations playing up front. Despite that, they’ve done pretty well protecting their quarterback and providing lanes for their backs. This week, they could be getting back left tackle Terron Armstead and right guard Robert Hunt. This would be the healthiest the line has been since Week 5 against the New York Giants.

What is the strength of Miami’s defense?

Dolphins Wire: Honestly, their strength is how good they are everywhere. At each level, Miami has potential Pro Bowlers. In the secondary, Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard have both already been All-Pros, and Jevon Holland will get there in the next few seasons. The front seven boasts talented players like Christian Wilkins, Bradley Chubb and the forever-underrated Zach Sieler. While they may have lost some of their pass-rushing strength with Jaelan Phillips tearing his Achilles last week, Andrew Van Ginkel has flashed when filling in for Phillips this year.

Do you see the 2023 Dolphins as a legit Super Bowl contender?

Dolphins Wire: Simply put – yes. Miami has talent up and down the roster who are led by impressive coaches on offense (McDaniel) and defense (Vic Fangio.) The Dolphins have a problem playing on the road and against good teams, but it’s something they can figure out. If they can do that and stay healthy, a path to the Super Bowl is definitely possible.

I think we know who wins, so what’s your overall game prediction?

Dolphins Wire: Fangio’s defense should be able to smother Washington’s offense, forcing Sam Howell to take at least five sacks and throw at least two interceptions. Offensively, Tua Tagovailoa will hit Waddle and Hill for at least 80 yards each, and Raheem Mostert will extend his league lead in rushing touchdowns with at least one score. Dolphins win 34-10
