The Commanders hired offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy away from the Chiefs to try and spark the offense, and one key offensive weapon believes the difference in the addition is already showing.
Running back Antonio Gibson said in an interview with the team website that Bieniemy has already shown what they need to be successful.
“The level of discipline, and what we need to be doing and how we need to do it, it shows right now,” he said. “By the time we get to the season, we’re gonna be ready for anything.”
As a result, Gibson thinks there is a part of his game that has been untapped, as he hopes he can show his receiving ability in the new offense.
“I haven’t shown my position. … Every year we talk about it, but it hasn’t happened.” he said. “Hopefully, this year, it comes around to where I get to showcase on multiple occasions what I can do out there.”
Coming out of Memphis in the 2020 draft, Gibson was considered a dual threat running back, but it hasn’t played out like that so far. Although he’s totaled 2,300 career rushing yards, he has just 894 receiving yards in three seasons so far.
With Bieniemy in tow, and Gibson a free agent after the season, the running back could have a big year before getting a payday next offseason.
