Commanders signing and inviting rookies to minicamp

Needing to bring in 90 players to training camp in July each NFL team is out signing undrafted free agents.

The Commanders thus far have signed wide receivers Kazmeir Allen (UCLA),  Jalen Sample (Minnesota State), Mitchell Tinsley (Penn State).

They have also signed offensive tackle Mason Brooks (Ole Miss) and wide receiver Brycen Tremayne (Stanford).

Addressing defense the Commanders have inked to deals, defensive end Joshua Pryor (Bowie State) and safeties Xavier Henderson (Michigan State) and Kendall Smith (Illinois).

Keep in mind that NFL teams are making moves right now, and you will be reading lots of names, but the opportunities are not exactly the same. A distinction should be maintained.

The above players have signed an undrafted free-agent contract. But in order to be able to conduct a functioning rookie mini-camp, teams need more players for drills.

Thus, teams agree to contact some other players and “invite” them officially to the rookie mini-camp. Thus far, the Commanders have invited quarterback Chase Brice (Appalachian State), running back Brad Roberts (Air Force) and receiver Brian Cobbs (Utah State).

On Twitter, it is being reported Mike Sawyer of Concord University and Bowie State All-American DB Raymond Boone have also been invited to rookie mini-camp.

Thus, there is naturally a hierarchy that is understandable amongst NFL rookies. There are drafted players, then undrafted free agents who are signed, and then there are mini-camp official invitees.

The players only invited to mini-camp must make an impression in order to be signed and brought into the team’s training camp later this summer.
