Commanders safety Kam Curl recently had surgery on his thumb

Washington Commanders safety Kam Curl raised eyebrows last week when he was spotted in practice with his right arm in a sling. After practice that day, head coach Ron Rivera told reporters he wasn’t going to talk about it until the following week.

“No, we don’t have to give you the injury report until next Wednesday, so we’ll stay away from all that,” Rivera said.

The Commanders returned to practice Monday and Curl was in uniform. There was no sling, but Curl had a cast on his right hand. Curl didn’t participate in practice, instead, worked with trainers on the side.

Curl spoke with reporters after practice and said he injured the thumb in the second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Curl said he hopes to play in Week 1, according to Sam Fortier of The Washington Post.

The first injury report of the 2022 season comes out on Wednesday, and we’ll know more about Curl’s status at that time.
