Commanders Release Quarterback Carson Wentz

The Commanders released quarterback Carson Wentz on Monday after just one season with the team.

The move doesn’t come as a complete surprise, as the Commanders were expected to “part ways” with Wentz.

Wentz was acquired from the Colts prior to last season, and he was expected to be the Commanders’ starter. However, Wentz finished the year with just seven starts in eight games, partially due to a fractured finger he suffered in Week 6. He didn’t return until Week 16.

The quarterback finished the season with 1,755 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Now the starting position for the 2023 season most likely will be up for grabs between the two remaining quarterbacks on the Commanders roster: Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell. Heinicke started in nine games last season, going 5–3–1. Howell finished his rookie season with just one start, a Week 18 win over Dallas.

Recent reports have listed Howell as the probable starter for the 2023 season.
