Commanders release kicker Cade York

The Washington Commanders have made another change at kicker. On Monday, Washington released kicker Cade York, only weeks after sending a conditional seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for York.

York joined Washington in time for its final preseason game and made the 53-man roster.

However, in his first game for the Commanders, York missed two field goals and had one kickoff go out of bounds. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received outstanding field position on all three of York’s kicks and eventually scored in a 37-20 Washington loss.

York was the third Washington kicker signed since the Commanders cut veteran Brandon McManus in June due to previous sexual assault allegations.

A standout kicker at LSU, York was a fourth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2022. After a solid rookie season, York struggled during training camp in 2023 and was waived after the Browns traded for Dustin Hopkins.

In 2023, York split time on the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans and the 53-man roster of the New York Giants. In March, he returned to the Browns and, after having a solid training camp, was traded to the Commanders.

Washington agreed to send a conditional seventh-round pick to Cleveland for York, but the condition was he must be on the roster for two games. The Commanders will not send a pick to the Browns for York.

Head coach Dan Quinn told the media Monday that the team would have a better answer on who would replace York on Wednesday.
