Commanders lose heartbreaker to Seahawks on last-second field goal

The Washington Commanders fell to 4-6 on the season after Sunday’s 29-26 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Commanders quarterback Sam Howell found wide receiver Dyami Brown for a 35-yard touchdown with 53 seconds remaining to tie the game at 26. Unfortunately for Washington, its defense allowed two big completions to Seattle wide receiver DK Metcalf for a combined 44 yards, putting the Seahawks in position for an easy 43-yard game-winning kick for Jason Myers.

Myers drilled it, sending the Commanders to their sixth loss.

Howell was excellent for the most part, completing 29 of 44 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. His biggest mistake was a fumble in the third quarter around midfield after he picked up 15 yards and a first down. Instead of sliding, Howell went for the extra yards and was hit by multiple Seattle defenders.

It’s Howell’s third consecutive game passing for over 300 yards. In those three games against Philadelphia, New England and Seattle, Howell has passed for a combined 1,034 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

Washington’s leading receiver on the day was running back Brian Robinson Jr., who had his first career 100-yard receiving game. Robinson caught six passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

It was the Commanders defense that struggled. Washington allowed 489 total yards, and Seattle quarterback Geno Smith had his best game of the season, passing for 369 yards without a turnover. Smith was only sacked once for no loss.

Washington cornerback Benjamin St-Juste struggled badly, particularly on the Seahawks’ final touchdown drive. Howell was flagged for pass interference and a face-mask penalty before giving up a touchdown reception to Tyler Lockett.

Next up for the Commanders is a rematch against the New York Giants.
