Washington’s offense didn’t fall apart, though, as Howell led another impressive drive, which included a throw to tight end Logan Thomas to set up first and goal. A few plays later, running back Brian Robinson Jr. appeared to score, but the ball came loose before he crossed the goal line. Fortunately for the Commanders, McLaurin landed on the ball to extend Washington’s lead to 14-7.
The Commanders had another scoring opportunity late but settled for a field goal. The Eagles responded with a field goal of their own before halftime, making it 17-10.
Howell completed 13 of 17 passes for 161 yards in the first half. He was decisive, checking the ball down efficiently. He did take two sacks, one of which occurred when he tried to escape the pocket and tripped over left tackle Charles Leno’s foot.
The Commanders outgained the Eagles 192-138 and possessed the football for 17 minutes and 17 seconds.
Philadelphia will begin the second half with the football.
