The game began with the teams trading punts. The Commanders went with a healthy dose of running back Antonio Gibson early but struggled to sustain a drive.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Colts scored first early in the second quarter when Indianapolis kicker Chase McLaughlin booted a 46-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

That’s when Washington answered with its best drive of the game. Offensive coordinator Scott Turner called a nice balance of run and pass plays, with the key play being a Taylor Heinicke 42-yard completion to star wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

To cap off the six-play, 75-yard drive, Heinicke found Gibson for a nine-yard touchdown and the Commanders took a 7-3 lead.

Gibson caught four passes for 39 yards in the first half and carried the ball five times for 16 yards. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. had five carries for 21 yards in the first half.

Heinicke completed eight of 11 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger completed seven of 11 passes for 57 yards in his first NFL start. Running back Jonathan Taylor carried the ball seven times for 55 yards in the first half.

Washington sacked Ehlinger twice in the first half and also forced a fumble. The Commanders will begin the second half with the football.
