Commanders GM Martin Mayhew says he had offers for No. 16 pick

The Washington Commanders entered the 2022 NFL draft with only six selections. Washington was without third- and fifth-round selections due to trades and badly wanted to add more draft capital.

In his pre-draft press conference this week, Washington general manager Martin Mayhew discussed trades and said the Commanders would leave the draft weekend with than the six selections they entered with in round one.

Mayhew was right. In the first trade of the 2022 NFL trade, the Commanders moved down five spots in a trade with the New Orleans Saints. In exchange for the No. 11 overall pick, Washington would receive the 16th, 98th and 120th overall selections in this draft.

According to John Keim of ESPN, Mayhew met with the media to discuss Washington’s selection of Jahan Dotson and admitted he had at least three offers to move back from No. 16.

Should the Commanders have accepted one of those offers and moved back further? If they wanted a wide receiver, it was probably wise to remain at No. 16. After Washington selected Dotson, Treylon Burks went two picks later.

Yes, Washington wanted to acquire more capital in rounds 2-4, but not at the expense of losing out on a wide receiver it had as one of the best on the board.
