Commanders DE Chase Young is ‘uncertain’ for Week 1

Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young suffered a stinger injury in the first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. He has not been cleared for contact since.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera has offered very few updates on Young, telling reporters, correctly, that he doesn’t need to discuss injuries until the Wednesday ahead of Week 1 — which is next week.

Last week, Rivera said Young was to see the doctor regarding his injury but offered nothing else.

On Thursday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reported that Young is “progressing” from the stinger injury but still has yet to be cleared for contact and that he’s “uncertain” for Week 1. Standig noted that Young is expected to meet with another doctor this week.

During his Thursday press conference, the first question for Rivera was about Young.

“The biggest thing I can tell you is the guy’s practicing, doing everything we need him to do right now as he’s getting ready for the opener,” Rivera said.

“No idea what the doctor’s going to do, but I do know right now that he’s told him he can continue to progress and get himself ready to go. Until then, there’s nothing that we can tell you. Nothing we can say. We’ll have the medical report come out on Wednesday.”

While the stinger injury isn’t considered a long-term injury, it’s still frustrating from Young’s perspective, having only played in three games last season due to knee surgery.

Young shed the knee brace early in training camp and has looked explosive. He suffered the stinger when pressuring Deshaun Watson on a near sack in the first quarter.
