Comic-Con: Two new Avengers films are in the works and they will end Phase 6 of the MCU

There are officially two new Avengers films in the works and they are going to end Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The news was announced by Marvel boss Kevin Feige at San Diego’s Comic-Con, which took place over the weekend.

Both forthcoming films - titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars - are set to be released in 2025, with the former coming out six months before the latter.

No further facts about the plot, the cast, which Avengers will be featuring, or the production team, have yet been revealed, though this doesn’t come as a surprise. The news is brand spanking new and unreleased MCU films are notoriously light on the details.

The news came as part of a wider announcement about the MCU Phase 5 films that are scheduled to come out soon. Feige declared that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – which is being released in November – would conclude Phase 4, while Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania would mark the start of Phase 5.

During the Phase 5 announcement fans found out that the new Daredevil series is going to be 18 episodes long and that the forthcoming Captain America: New World Order film will be released in May 2024.

If all this Phase business is new to you, it’s not as difficult to follow as it may seem. Simply, the MCU can be broken down into different phases.

Running over the 14 years since Iron Man was released in 2008, the Phases are Phase 1 (2008 to 2012), Phase 2 (2013 to 2015), Phase 3 (2016 to 2019), Phase 4 (2021 to 2022), Phase 5 (2023 to 2024) and Phase 6 (2024 to 2025).

Phases 1 to 3 are called The Infinity Saga and Phases 4 to 6 are called The Multiverse Saga.

There are so far four Avenger films: 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

The Avengers are a team of superheroes that have been brought together by Nick Fury, the director of the counter-terrorism agency S.H.I.E.L.D., after he perceives a growing number of threats to earth.

Members of the Avengers are the very well-known Captain America, Iron Man, Thor Odinson, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and the slightly less well-known new additions, comprising War Machine, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon, Nebula, Okoye and Rocket.

Even though bringing out two Avengers films in one year could sound like a daring investment, the move makes sense: 2019’s Avengers: Endgame remains the second highest grossing film worldwide of all time, raking in a whopping $2.7 billion, and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War also remains at the 5th spot – showing that the franchise has spectacular and unrivalled power at the box office.
