Comedy legend Bobby Pattinson awarded Freeman of Gateshead for his dedication to entertainment, business, and charity

Local legend Bobby Pattinson has been made an Honorary Freeman of Gateshead in recognition of his services to entertainment, business, and charity.

Councillors, fellow Freemen, and family gathered to witness the ceremony at Gateshead Civic Centre and to pay tribute to the comedy icon, now aged 88.

Throughout his career, Bobby has used his talents not just to entertain but to help a number of charitable causes including children's charity Variety, for which he raised £100,000 in 2014. The effort earned him the award "Silver Heart", the organisation's highest honour.

Bobby has also helped local schools for disabled children by raising money for buses. The funny man and businessman had already raised funds for five but plans to get the money for a sixth in the near future.

The born entertainer also owned 18 care homes in Gateshead, serving at one time approximately 1,300 elderly residents.

Mr Pattinson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "It feels how you would expect it, surprising but really great. To be honoured by your own people, who know who you were, who you are.

"I am delighted to bits to take this award because it has been given by people who know you and you are happy to give it to you. I am happy to accept.

"That's what I really like because I love the North East, I could live anywhere in the world, but I don't bother, I keep coming back to Gateshead, it's the place I love."

Regarding his charity work, Bobby said: "You don't do this to get it [The Freeman], you do it because it is the thing to do, what you can do, what you are able to do it, and it benefits everyone connected with it".

Councillor Catherine Donovan said: "I know Bobby and his family must be incredibly proud of everything he has achieved and hopefully this is a fitting tribute to you and all your achievements.

"Each of our Freeman has made a significant contribution to Gateshead, leaving a legacy that will be felt for generations to come. They have all helped to improve Gateshead and how it is perceived locally, nationally and internationally.

" I am sure you will all agree that Bobby is no different and is a worthy recipient for this and has always been and will continue to be a fantastic ambassador for Gateshead".
