Comedian Rhod Gilbert has revealed he is being treated for cancer and has paused his Book of John tour.

The 53-year-old Welshman told Facebook followers he was in the “best possible hands” being treated at Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff - which he has previously raised money for.

“While I never imagined that I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands,” he wrote.

“The NHS care I’m receiving is incredible. I wouldn't wish this on anyone...but who knows, maybe I'll come out the other end with a new stand-up show and a 40 minute rant about orange squash.

As well as his stand up show, which has won him fans for his unique outlook on everyday life, Gilbert has been a regular on BBC panel shows such as Would I Lie to You?, Have I Got News for You, and QI. He has also presented his own series’ Ask Rhod Gilbert and Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience.

He has already completed 200 tour dates on the Book of John tour. The postponed events are in Swansea, Hereford, Yeovil, and Truro.

Gilbert, who married partner Sian Harries in 2013, added: “Thank you everyone for your support over the last few weeks and months (and years). I’ll be disappearing for a while and won’t be commenting further, at least not for now, whilst I focus on my recovery.”
