Comedian Pat Shortt says poking fun at himself has helped him stay away from controversy

Comedian Pat Shortt has admitted poking fun at himself has avoided the comic from being cancelled.

The Tipperary native is currently touring with his daughter Faye on their comedy show Well.

Asked how he dodges controversy by people offended by his material, he said: “What I do is a different style from all those artists you’re talking about. There is room for everybody but I do daft silly stuff which is always on me. The joke is on me."

The D'Unbelievables star says he still enjoys comedy decades later - and can always blame his characters he portrays to take the heat if he ever landed himself in hot water.

He said: “No, I’m enjoying it. I mean it from the point of view of the characters I play. So I don’t insult people or say things that might be seen as controversial or if I do, it’s done through the eyes of a character, which you can always say it was the character who did it.

“In a sense of what I do it is in a genre, it is through the eyes of a character. So I’m not a stand-up, although I’ve done a lot more stand-up in the last while but it is done through a narrative."

It comes after Pat admitted Late Late Show bosses should consider a comedian for the job.

Asked if he thought a comedian should be considered as its next host, he reckoned it shouldn't be ruled out.

"No. Well maybe, maybe.... My view on it is that the show needs a shake-up. What that is, I don't know. I'm not a TV producer who makes those decisions.

"But I think Ryan has done a great job and I think he has done an amazing job with the Toy Show. It's incredible. But I think the Late Late Show needs a shake-up big time."

Pat said RTE should take inspiration from American chat shows for its future format.

"I would look towards American chat shows like Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon."
