Comedian Eddie Izzard bids to become Labour MP for Brighton Pavilion

COMEDIAN Eddie Izzard is standing to be a Labour MP in Brighton Pavilion, it has been confirmed.

Izzard, who failed in her previous bid to become Labour’s Westminster candidate for Sheffield Central last year, will now contest the seat held by outgoing Green MP Caroline Lucas.

Announcing the bid on social media, Izzard put her pitch to voters.

She tweeted: “Brighton Pavilion! I am very excited to announce that I'm standing to be your next Labour MP.

“If you want me to be your champion for equality, sustainability and opportunity for all, vote for me!”

Izzard's announcement was accompanied by a slick two-minute-long promotional video, where she said: “Brighton is a city at the forefront of change, and I want to continue to help it make that change.

“Running marathons, raising money for great causes, and campaigning in more than 125 constituencies has taught me to turn struggles into success.

“I’m standing to be the next Labour MP for Brighton Pavillion, to support this brilliant city, and its diverse and vibrant community.”

Izzard said that she grew up in the county and is “proud of my roots”, adding: “Whilst the Tories stoke fear and encourage culture wars, Brighton has shown the country another way.

“Open-minded and welcoming to all, with a thriving arts creative and cultural scene, imaginative, energetic and full of entrepreneurial spirit.

“But for 13 years, the Tories have tried to drag us down. Police numbers cut, fewer dentists, doctors and nurses, a rail network grinding to a halt and sewage dumping into the sea.

“Hiking the cost of everything, and holding Brighton back.”

Izzard, who went to school in Eastbourne, had previously said she would love to be an MP for “anywhere up North”. The Brighton Pavilion constituency is in the South of England, in East Sussex.

The announcement on Friday morning had over 183,000 views by lunchtime, with over 1500 likes and 146 retweets.
