Dave Chappelle attacked on stage by man with gun as Chris Rock jokes: 'Was that Will Smith?'

Comedian Dave Chappelle has been attacked while on stage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

A shocking video, which was shared to Twitter, shows an audience member suddenly run on stage from the side attempting to tackle Chapelle to the ground.

Chapelle tussled with the man, who ran behind the screen on stage and was surrounded by security.

LAPD were called to the incident around 10:45 p.m. and a man who was reportedly armed with a gun and a knife was taken into custody.

Chris Rock, who performed earlier for the same Netflix Is A Joke festival, came on stage with him and joked: “Was that Will Smith?”

Following the incident, the comedian appeared to carry on with the show.

He later told the audience: "I don’t know if that was part of the show.

"I grabbed the back of that n****s head, his hair was spongy, absorbant."

"Listen, I just want to say I’ve had an incredible time," he added.

Following the shocking incident, audience members flocked to Twitter to share snippets of the unexpected stage storm.

One guest watching the show live tweeted: "I’m at this Dave Chappelle concert and tell me why some guy ran up in stage and tackled him."

Meanwhile, musician E5quire, tweeted: "DaveChappelle just got attacked on stage at #HollywoodBowl while making jokes. I’ve officially seen it all."

More videos on Twitter appear to show the attacker being loaded into an ambulance with an injured arm after security guards forced the man off the comedian.

Brianna Sacks, a reporter at the show, said 'a man charged and tackled' Chappelle just as the show was ending.

She said security 'rushed and started punching and kicking the s*** out of Chappelle's attacker'.

Los Angeles-based journalist Sharon Carpenter, who attended Chappelle’s show at the Hollywood Bowl, told the PA news agency an attacker 'lunged' at the comedian as he closed the evening, sending him 'flying in the air'.

She said: “It looked like someone was dashing across the stage from the side. It was a little hard to see because people were standing up at that point and leaving. But it looked like someone dashed from the side of the stage, lunged at Dave, and all I saw was Dave basically flying in the air.

“He fell backwards on to his back, with his arms and legs up in the air. He was obviously in shock. We were all in shock. And I thought for a moment ‘OK, is this a prank?’ because they had made some Will Smith jokes. Even though Chris Rock was there, Dave was making some jokes, it was fair game, right? He was making some jokes about the situation.”

Carpenter said security officers and members of Chappelle’s entourage had then rushed on to the stage.

She added: “He just tried to keep the show going and was making jokes about the situation, but he was also pissed off about it as well.”

British comedian Jimmy Carr shared a selfie taken with fellow comedian Dave Chappelle and described his Los Angeles show as 'crazy' after the stand-up comic was reportedly attacked while on stage.

He tweeted: “The Hollywood Bowl show with the legendary Dave Chappelle was crazy. Just happy everyone’s ok.”

The comedian has faced much criticism in recent years following his controversial comments on the Trans community.

In another short clip from the live show, Dave appears to joke that the attacker on stage was a 'Trans man'.

The Mirror has reached out to Dave's representatives for comment.
