Colts sign WR KJ Hamler to practice squad, elevate two for Week 4

The Indianapolis Colts made some roster moves Saturday ahead of the Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, including the addition of a former second-round wide receiver to the practice squad.

The Colts also elevated two players from the practice squad to the active roster for the Week 4 matchup and released a cornerback from the practice squad to make room for the new addition at wide receiver.

Rodgers will be the fifth wide receiver for the Colts on the active roster. During the first three weeks, it was Juwann Winfree who was getting elevated, but he maxed out his eligibility to be elevated from the practice squad. This is Rodgers’ first elevation of the 2023 season.

Boettger joined the practice squad during the regular season and will be brought up for depth purposes considering the injuries to the offensive line. This is Boettger’s second elevation from the practice squad. He’s eligible to be elevated one more time before he must be signed to the active roster if the Colts want him available for game days.

WR KJ Hamler signed to practice squad

Hamler joins the practice squad after being released by the Denver Broncos this offseason. Hamler, 24, was a second-round pick with the Broncos in the 2020 NFL draft. The Penn State product has dealt with a litany of injuries since entering the NFL, including a torn ACL (2021), a torn pectoral muscle (2023) and two separate hamstring injuries that required stints on the injured reserve list (2020, 2022).

However, the most recent ailment Hamler has dealt with led to his release in July. Hamler was diagnosed with pericarditis, mild heart irritation, and the Broncos waived him with a non-football illness designation.

For what it’s worth, Broncos head coach Sean Payton told the media during training camp that the expected recovery timeline would be roughly one month and then a few more weeks to get Hamler’s conditioning back.

To make room for Hamler on the practice squad, Hall was released. He was signed to the practice squad on Aug. 31 following roster cuts.
