After signing 14 players on Monday to reserves/futures contracts, the Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that they made another addition, adding linebacker Jacob Phillips to their 2025 roster.
These reserves/futures deals are given to players who are not on the 53-man roster and prevent those players from negotiating and signing with another team. These deals help teams build out their 90-man rosters for offseason programs and training camp.
Phillips, who measures in at 6-3 – 228 pounds, is a former third-round pick out of LSU in the 2020 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns.
He has played 687 career defensive snaps, all of which came between the 2020 and 2022 seasons, and also has 146 career special teams snaps.
During Phillips’ 2022 season he recorded three pressures, made 49 of his 55 tackle attempts and recorded one pass breakup in coverage while surrendering 13.2 yards per catch, according to Pro Football Focus.
Most recently, Phillips spent time with the Houston Texans.
The linebacker position should be on that is one the Colts’ radar this season. While rookie Jaylon Carlies showed a lot of promise, EJ Speed and Grant Stuard are both set to be free agents this offseason. At a minimum, bolstering the depth of this group and adding competition should be on the to-do list.
