Indianapolis Colts first-year head coach Shane Steichen will be using the spring practices to evaluate the roster and several of the players who were already here from the previous regime, including tight end Kylen Granson.
A fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Granson was known as a favorite selection of former head coach Frank Reich. It was made well-known that Reich was essentially pounding the table for Granson on Day 3 of the draft.
But how Granson’s game would fit within Steichen’s offense remained a bit of a mystery. At least, until Steichen got to see the SMU product play against the Colts defense for the first time at OTAs this week.
It’s safe to say Granson has made an early impression on his new head coach, showcasing some superb route running ability.
“Gosh, he’s got great route-running ability. I’m really pleased where he’s at. He understands the game of football really well. He understands leverage, technique, all those different things – how to get himself open,” Steichen told reporters Thursday. “Really pleased with where he’s at and his route-running ability and also as a blocker.”
The tight end room is one of the most crowded positions for the Colts going into training camp. Granson has been a mainstay at the position since being drafted, especially considering he fits the unique role of H-back while also serving as the move/flex tight end.
However, the Colts also added Miami’s Will Mallory in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft. Mallory might be the biggest threat to Granson’s role, especially considering how much Steichen liked the Hurricanes prospect during the pre-draft process.
Granson has always been an intriguing option due to his route-running ability, speed and impact after the catch. With the tight end room all competing against each other, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Granson continued to solidify his role as the move tight end.
Regardless, it doesn’t hurt that he’s made a strong impression on his new head coach early in the spring workouts.
