A second-round pick out of Alabama in the 2006 NFL draft, Ryans spent six seasons with the Houston Texans (2006-2011) and spent the final four seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles (2012-2015).
He got his start in coaching with the 49ers as a defensive quality control coach in 2017. He was then promoted to inside linebackers coach, a role he held for three seasons (2018-2020). He’s been the defensive coordinator for the last two seasons (2021-present).
Ryans has been known to connect well with his players, and his recent success as a defensive coordinator makes him a popular candidate.
The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay.
