Indianapolis Colts left guard Quenton Nelson held the title of the NFL’s highest-paid guard for a whole seven months before relinquishing the crown this offseason.
Back in September, the Colts signed Nelson to a record four-year deal worth $80 million with $60 million guaranteed and an average annual value (AAV) of $20 million. That was the going rate for elite guards in the NFL for the last half-year.
Now, that title belongs to Atlanta Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom, who agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $105 million with $63 million guaranteed and an AAV of $21 million.

Nelson set the bar for guards last season, but in the true nature of the NFL, it wasn’t long before another player set the new record for a contract at the position.
As the salary cap continues to rise year over year in the NFL, the contracts will continue to get bigger. Hopefully, Nelson’s contract will look more like a bargain sooner rather than later.
