Colts’ QB Kedon Slovis selected 12th overall in UFL draft

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Kedon Slovis was selected by the DC Defenders in the second round of the UFL college draft on Wednesday.

Slovis was signed by the Colts this past April as an undrafted rookie out of BYU following the 2024 NFL draft.

The UFL celebrated its inaugural season this past spring after the USFL and XFL merged. The draft pool available to UFL teams included only undrafted players from the 2024 class.

Slovis comes to the NFL as an experienced college quarterback, having spent three seasons at UCS, the 2022 season with Pittsburgh and the most recent season at BYU.

Slovis had an impressive 2019 season with USC, bursting on the scene as he completed 72 percent of his throws at 8.9 yards per attempt with 30 touchdowns to just nine interceptions.

After that season, however, Slovis’ production would never get back to that level. In 2023, he completed 57 percent of his passes at 7.6 yards per attempt with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

“It’s a lot that has happened,’’ Slovis said when meeting with reporters. “Got to play at three different schools over five years. I try to see optimistically (that) I got three completely different experiences and got to play five years of college football.

“Seen some really good, seen some adversity. I’ve seen it all, but grateful for it, and I’ve put that behind me. I’m just trying to make the most of this opportunity.’’

The first two spots on the Colts’ quarterback depth chart are set with Anthony Richardson healthy and starting and Joe Flacco as the backup. Whether or not the Colts roster a third quarterback–for what it’s worth, they did in 2023–remains to be seen, but Slovis will be competing with Sam Ehlinger and Jason Bean for that role.

Along with Slovis getting selected in the UFL draft, Bean was the first overall selection.

Although Slovis was drafted by the DC Defenders, he is still on the Colts’ roster with Indianapolis holding his contract rights. The upcoming UFL season won’t begin until next spring, at which point Slovis could have another option depending on how this season goes for him and as long as he’s not under contract with an NFL team.
