Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Anthony Richardson spoke with the media for the first time since the news broke that he would be benched for Joe Flacco–a move that doesn’t seem to be for just the short-term, but for the remainder of the season.
“Of course, everybody knows the news,” said Richardson. “I’m not starting this upcoming week. Of course it hurts. As a competitor, you definitely don’t want to be told that you’re not the guy anymore for the upcoming week. But it’s all good, I’m using the opportunity to grow and just learn from my mistakes.”
This decision by Steichen came on the heels of another poor performance from the Colts passing game along with Richardson also subbing himself out for a play against Houston because he was “tired.”
Steichen has been adamant that Richardson tapping out of the game for a play was not a factor in the decision to bench him.
While Richardson acknowledged that as a leader he can’t do that, he also wasn’t sure if him doing that was a factor in being benched.

So what was the specific reason for the Colts starting Flacco? As Steichen said on Wednesday, the veteran gives the Colts the best chance to win. But if you ask Richardson, the reason wasn’t fully explained to him.

Moving forward, Richardson will be the Colts’ backup and for the foreseeable future. When asked if he will start again for the Colts, Richardson said he is always confident in himself.
“I’m still going to prepare as if I am the starter,” said Richardson. “I feel like there is an opportunity for me to step back on the field, and when it does present itself, I’m going to take advantage of it.”
