Colts coach Shane Steichen announced Thursday that first-round draft pick Anthony Richardson will get the start in the team’s first preseason game on Saturday over Gardner Minshew.
“My first NFL experience, just trying to get a victory and showcase my talents,” Richardson told reporters Thursday.
There’s been plenty of hype around Richardson ever since his days at Florida, most notably for his absurd athleticism. He stands at 6’4” and weighs 244 pounds and his frame played a big role in his 654 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground for the Gators in 2022. He also threw for 2,549 yards and 17 touchdowns to nine interceptions last year before entering the draft.
Minshew is currently competing with Richardson for the starting spot on the team. Indianapolis signed the 27-year-old in March after stints with the Jaguars and Eagles. He’s very familiar with Steichen, who was Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator for the last two years. He appeared in nine games over the last two seasons as a backup for Jalen Hurts with the Eagles and tallied 1,102 passing yards and seven touchdown passes during his limited time on the field.
Richardson has a long way to go before the starting spot is officially his, but all eyes will be on him come Saturday when his team faces the Bills at 1 p.m. ET.
