Colts make Carson Wentz trade official

The Indianapolis Colts officially announced the trade sending quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders on Wednesday.

With the new league year officially here as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the trade is now real. Along with Wentz, the Colts sent the No. 47 overall and No. 240 overall picks to Washington.

With the trade now official, here’s a look at the full details of the deal:

Colts receive: 2022 second-round pick (No. 42), 2022 third-round pick (No. 73), conditional 2023 third-round pick
Washington receives: QB Carson Wentz, 2022 second-round pick (No. 47), 2022 seventh-round pick (No. 240)

The Colts will be in the market for a quarterback. What direction they go in is still a mystery. They are likely waiting for the Deshaun Watson domino to fall first. They have interest in Jimmy Garoppolo but they may also be waiting for his price to continue dropping as well.

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield reportedly prefers to go to the Colts if he’s traded. There hasn’t yet been any reported interest from the Colts’ side yet.

The conditions of the 2023 third-round pick are essentially the same as the deal the Colts had with the Eagles. If Wentz plays 70% of Washington’s offensive snaps during the 2022 season, that pick turns into a second-rounder.

On top of the trio of draft picks the Colts received, they also got the Commanders to take on the entirety of Wentz’s contract. That means all $28.3 million that Wentz was set to receive now falls under the blanket of the Commanders.
