The Indianapolis Colts selected former Georgia wide receiver George Pickens with their second-round pick in Todd McShay’s latest mock draft for ESPN.
In this mock draft, the Colts opted against taking quarterback prospects Sam Howell and Carson Strong in favor of Pickens. With Matt Ryan at the helm now, building pieces around him might take precedence.
Here’s what McShay said about the Colts grabbing Pickens at No. 42 overall:
“The Colts don’t have a first-rounder, but Pickens has first-round traits. A torn ACL last March pushed him into the Day 2 conversation, which means this could be a steal for Indy. He is really good at getting off press coverage, and his ability to track the deep ball might be his best skill.”
Had it not been for the torn ACL that Pickens suffered in the spring of 2021, we would likely be talking about him being more of a surefire first-rounder. His talent, size, speed and age-adjusted production show a profile that would be worthy of high draft capital.
Pickens brings a leaner frame, measuring in at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds. He posted a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine.
Pickens brings a long frame with consistently secure hands. Throughout his time at Georgia, Pickens has shown the ability to track a deep ball extremely well while his body control and adjustments to throws mid-air are impressive traits.
The Colts may be bullish on their wide receiver room but Pickens would be a strong addition to the group. He would immediately compete for the WR2 role opposite Michael Pittman Jr. while giving Indy some fresh blood in the passing game.
