The Indianapolis Colts will be without starting running back Jonathan Taylor for the third time this season when they visit the New England Patriots, but there doesn’t seem to be any plans to place him on the injured reserve list.
Taylor initially injured his ankle late in the Week 4 loss to the Tennessee Titans. He missed the next two games but seemingly tweaked the ankle again in Week 8 against the Washington Commanders.
Even though Taylor finished the game, he failed to practice all week and was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
As it currently stands, the Colts don’t have any plans to put Taylor on the injured reserve list, according to head coach Frank Reich.
“We’ve discussed it and really, this has kind of taken care of itself – kind of give him the rest that he needs. I thought we had a chance – that it might progress a little bit better than it did this week, but it didn’t,” Reich said Friday. “So, we’ve got to be smart, do what’s right for the player and do what’s right for the team.”
As is the case with everything in the NFL, expectations can change on a dime. Should the Colts lose Sunday to the Patriots, it may change how the Colts feel about the rest of the season. That may lead them to make sure Taylor is fully healthy when he returns.
There haven’t been any reports about that at all, but it’s not outside the range of outcomes.
Regardless, the Colts will be without Taylor for the third time this season, and the hope is he will make his return at some point in the next two or three weeks.
