Colts confirm Gardner Minshew II will start vs. Jaguars in Week 6

Former Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Gardner Minshew II will be under center for the Indianapolis Colts in his first game back at EverBank Stadium since being traded in 2021.

On Monday, Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters that the shoulder injury suffered by rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, who started against the Jaguars in Week 1, will keep him out Sunday and perhaps longer.

Minshew, 27, has already started one game for Indianapolis this season, stepping into the lineup in Week 3 after Richardson suffered a concussion in the week prior.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft, Minshew was thrust into action in his first career game after Nick Foles suffered a broken clavicle in his Jaguars debut. Minshew started 12 games as a rookie in Jacksonville and eight games in his second season, tallying 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during his time with the team.

But after the Jaguars selected Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Minshew was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a sixth-round pick that was eventually used to select cornerback Gregory Junior.

Minshew didn’t play at all when the Jaguars lost to Philadelphia during the 2022 season. He threw just two passes in the final minute of Jacksonville’s 31-21 win against the Colts in Week 1 of this season.

Indianapolis and Jacksonville are currently tied for the lead in the AFC South with matching 3-2 records, although the Jaguars currently own the tiebreaker due to their Week 1 win.
