It’s been a busy Friday in the AFC South, with two of the Indianapolis Colts’ division rivals making changes to their coaching staffs.
The first is that after a wild 48 hours, the Jacksonville Jaguars have announced that Liam Coen will be the team’s next head coach.
Previously, Coen spent the 2024 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their offensive coordinator and orchestrated one of the more effective offenses in football.
In addition to Baker Mayfield putting up career numbers in several key categories, the Bucs’ offense as a whole was the only unit in the NFL to rank top-five in points per game, rushing yards per game, and passing yards per game.
Coen now joins a Jaguars’ offense that features Trevor Lawrence at quarterback, and Coen will also reportedly play a key role in helping Jacksonville find their next general manager.
Along with that addition, the Houston Texans made a coaching move of their own, moving on from offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, according to Adam Schefter.
Despite the Texans making it to the AFC divisional round of the playoffs, the Houston offense went backwards in Year 2 under Slowik, ranking 18th in points per game, 19th in yards per play, and 23rd in expected points added (EPA).
These moves come on the heels of the Colts making their own coaching move, announcing Lou Anarumo as the team’s new defensive coordinator earlier this week.
