The Indianapolis Colts are hiring Chris Hewitt to be their new passing game coordinator and secondary coach under defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, according to Tom Pelissero.
This role was previously filled by Ron Milus on Gus Bradley’s staff.
Hewitt has been in the Baltimore Ravens’ organization since 2012 and has held various roles during that span working with the defensive backs. Most recently, Hewitt was the Ravens’ assistant head coach, pass game coordinator, and secondary coach.
During his tenure with the Ravens, Hewitt worked under some prominent defensive coordinators, including Wink Martindale, Mike McDonald, and Dean Pees.
This past season, the Ravens defense ranked eighth in completion rate allowed, sixth in pass deflections, and 15th in quarterback passer rating. Baltimore has produced a number of Pro Bowlers and several All-Pros at cornerback and safety during Hewitt’s tenure as well.
With Anarumo coming over from Cincinnati, he’s gotten a good look Hewitt’s defensive backfields over the last six years.
As GM Chris Ballard said after the season, the play in the secondary has to improve. In part, that’s on Ballard to bring in added talent and competition. But in addition to that, Lou Anarumo’s defensive scheme can help elevate the play of the defensive backs and Hewitt has a track record of doing that as well.
It would appear that the Colts defensive coaching staff is now built out with Charlie Partridge returning to coach the defensive line and the addition of James Bettcher to coach the linebackers.
