Colorado Republicans Criticize Democrats Over Spending On Migrant Services

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried, center, speaks during a Biden-Harris 2024 campaign news conference, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, in Miami. The event coincides with the third GOP primary debate i

Colorado Republicans are expressing concerns over the financial impact of services provided to migrants in Denver, with recent reports revealing that the city has spent over $356 million in taxpayer dollars on such services. This amount averages to $7,900 per foreign national in the city and represents 8% of the city's total 2025 budget.

Republican leaders, including Rose Pugliese, have criticized the Democrat-controlled legislature for what they perceive as a heavy burden on local and state resources due to the influx of migrants. Pugliese highlighted that since 2021, an estimated $563 million has been spent on illegal immigrants in Colorado, with a significant portion allocated to education spending.

Pugliese emphasized the need for accurate data on illegal immigrants in the state, stating that the lack of public estimates hampers effective budget planning. She called for a focus on removing and deporting illegal immigrants who have committed crimes against citizens.

City councilman Roger Hudson of Castle Pines also voiced concerns about the impact of migrants on Denver, citing issues such as reduced funding for essential services like public schools and parks. Hudson criticized Democrats for what he described as a decline in the city's overall quality of life, pointing to challenges like an increase in homelessness and criminal activities.

Hudson further highlighted incidents in communities surrounding Denver, such as Aurora, where criminal activities by migrants have raised security concerns. He expressed dismay over the negative transformation of once hopeful neighborhoods into areas plagued by substance abuse and crime.

While the Denver City Council declined to comment on the specific spending on migrant services, a representative noted that the council's role is primarily legislative and not involved in day-to-day operations of such services.

The debate between Republicans and Democrats in Colorado underscores the complex challenges posed by immigration and the differing perspectives on how best to address them.
