Colombian Soccer Club President Fatally Shot After Team's Home Defeat

The president of Colombian second division soccer club Tigres FC was shot and killed on Saturday following the team’s defeat during a home match against Atletico FC, per a club announcement.

According to ESPN, Edgar Paez, 63, was fatally shot while returning home by car following a 3-2 defeat against Atletico FC on Saturday. Reports indicate his daughter was present at the time of the shooting but escaped unharmed.

The incident reportedly occurred near the club’s stadium, the Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, at around 6:15 p.m. local time.

According to Marca, Paez was taken to a local medical clinic where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities are investigating the incident.

“The Tigres family and the sporting community are devastated by this event,” said the club in part of its statement. “His commitment to the team and his dedication to the development of the sport in our region left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Tigres FC is in 15th place in the table in the Colombian second tier, having won two games, drawn three, and lost eight in their first 13 matches this season.

The club intends to hold a minute of silence for Paez in its upcoming games.
